What is the ISF?
Please read information about us in the "About ISF" section.

Can you please tell me about ISF's review process?
You can find this information in the ''Review process'' section.

What computer can I use?
ISFonline supports the following:

PC users:
Operating systems: WIN2000, WIN 7
Browsers: Internet Explorer version 6 and up

MAC users:
Operating systems: MAC OS X
Browsers: Mozilla Firefox version 3 and up (can be downloaded for free at http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/)

ISFonline might work correctly using other platforms, but the ISF cannot be responsible for that and cannot support in those cases.

How was I selected ?
Each year we have a new professional committee composed of Israeli scientists in the relevant area. These scientists recommend reviewers based either on their personal knowledge or on lists we provide to find researchers working close to the field of each proposal. These lists are the result of a research our information specialists conduct (using various professional databases, according to the keywords the applicants supply). The committee selects the most appropriate professional scholars as reviewers.

What would you like me to write in the review? How long should it be?
Our reviews consist of two parts, numerical rating and a written evaluation. Please look at our form in the ''Guidelines and Forms'' section to see the points we would appreciate you address when writing the review. We receive reviews at varying lengths; what is important to us is that you provide us with all the comments you feel are relevant to the evaluation of this proposal.

I have already reviewed this proposal in the past. Why are you asking for another review?
It is possible to resubmit a proposal that was rejected once. In this case, the applicant must add a resubmission letter to the proposal explaining the improvements that were made and answering the reviewers' comments. This proposal will be evaluated just like a regular proposal handed in for the first time. When possible, we prefer to receive reviews from reviewers who have helped us previously with the same proposal, because they are able to evaluate the changes that were made.

Will the applicants know my identity?
No. We send extracts of the reviews to applicants, but we remove names or any identifying information.

May I ask for additional information or clarification from the applicants ?
No. The application should be judged as it stands. If important information is lacking, please raise this as a point in your review. However, you may ask us for copies of articles accepted for publication, which have been referenced in the manuscript.

May I contact the applicants?
We keep our reviewers' identification strictly confidential, and appreciate our reviewers' cooperation concerning this matter.

Must I meet your deadline?
Not always. If the deadline shown on our 'Confirmation Sheet'' is not feasible, please indicate the nearest convenient date or contact us for an extension. Your review is of great importance to us; please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you submit it.

How can I send you my review?
There are a few options listed bellow; the first is the most preferred method; the last - the least:
1. Through the website: Using the username and password we gave you.
2. By e-mail: You may send your written evaluation by e-mail to reviews@isf.org.il. It can be plain text in the body of the message or an attachment (outside the body of the message, not encoded). A blank grading form is available for downloading in the section ''Guidelines and Forms''.
3. By fax: Here too, we started the list of fax numbers with the one we prefer most, and worked our way down:
a. 972-2-654-4309
b. 972-2-654-4308
c. 972-2-563-5782
4. By mail: Our postal address is:
Israel Science Foundation
POB 4040
Jerusalem 91040
Israel

What will you do with the review I send you?
We will pass your review on to the committee members, where it will assist them in making funding decisions during the final professional meeting. When we announce the results, we send all applicants the edited reviews (from which we have removed all identifying details).

Will I be informed of the outcome of the proposal ?
Not automatically. Results are announced in late July; they appear on our website in late summer.

Will I be paid for the review?
No. Unfortunately, we do not pay reviewers; our funds are directed almost solely at research grants and very minimum administrative expenses. The research community is usually generous in performing peer-reviews, as a contribution to the advancement of scientific research.
